scary things
Aug. 26th, 2008 11:01 amThis year, from birthday to birthday, is my year for conquering phobias. I think I've done a smashing job of conquering the Big One, my fear of flying -- I've been on 6 planes and flown across the country and back twice, and to New York, and by the time the year's over I'll have flown across the country AGAIN, and one little skip-'n- hop trip to Florida. GO, ME!!!
But I'm not posting this to brag...exactly. I'm posting it to analyze...what makes us afraid? With flying, it was obvious to me. If God had meant for us to fly he'd have given us wings...so how do planes know how to fly? I can't fathom it, so I'd made up my mind that they really *can't*, and so if I got on one it would, logically, crash. Now that I've proven that hypothesis to be untrue, I'm slightly less afraid to fly. Just as long as my friend Valium flies with me. ;)
The other phobia -- the one that inspired this ramble -- is Cirque du Soleil. It was on The View as I was eating my breakfast, and my gut instinct was to change the channel...but I didn't. Nor did I leave the room or cover my eyes. Cirque du Soleil's performers scare the crap out of me; the costumes and the way they move to the eerie music...but on some primal level I'm attracted to it; I think it's beautiful. On tv today they were performing a number from O. Do you see why it scares me? But I'm desensitizing myself to it, slowly, because I *AM* gonna get to Vegas one of these days (the GFG2!) and I'm dying to see (the VERY R-rated) Zumanity. And lest you think it's all femmeslash ;), damn, do they give the boys equal opportunity! (fans self) Two men.
Some things are just worth SMITING a phobia for!
