What struck me the most was the repeated use of the word children because it seemed to stop meaning the little ones he left behind and started to mean everyone.
What a great observation. Jack, having been put in the position of being the "Moses" of the island, does feel responsible for everyone, and leaving some behind probably does make him feel like a "bad father."
