Lost 4.03
So, between being horribly spoiled --
and btw, are there any 12-step programs out there for spoilerholics? 'cause if there aren't there should be
-- and having read all your reviews (which I will respond to as soon as I post this), I've just got a couple of things to say about Lost 4.03. [ETA: 'k, MORE than a couple of things. The ep was just THAT GOOD!]
1. As of this ep I'm convinced, LOST GOT ITS GROOVE BACK!!! I'm loving this season. LOVING. IT. :D
2. Okay, I'm cutting for those who haven't watched 4.03, but the rest of you don't have to be scared, I will not spoil you for future episodes. Pinkie promise.

zelda_zee covered future!Sayid's hotness quite thoroughly, so I'll just say WORD. I kept envisioning straightening all that silky black hair and then styling it all nice and sexy...wait. Come back, Sawyer, I wasn't cheating on your hair, really! Eep! It's a fetish, I can't help myself!
I have to admit that Sayid's backstories never did much for me, but his future intrigues me. I think y'all have said everything I'd say about that already so I won't repeat, but I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see where they go with this. Has Sayid sold his soul to the devil? IS Ben the devil? Or could Ben be using Sayid for some hidden agenda that's meant to accomplish something great? If there's one thing I believe about Ben, it's that HE believes that 1) he's destined to be a Great Man, and 2) the end justifies the means. But the way he uses people as pawns tells me that he isn't a GOOD man. I mean, Hitler thought he was working for the greater good, too. Believing something doesn't necessarily make it so. I can't imagine what kind of hold Ben has over Sayid, but I trust Sayid's judgment more than I do Ben's and I don't believe that Sayid is willingly in his service.
I'm convinced now that whatever happened/is happening on the island has worldwide implications. I'm also pretty sure that from now on we'll be watching two stories, one taking place on the island and one taking place out in the world...and at some point in the future, the two stories will converge. One thing's for sure, and that's that Lost is a much, much more epic tale than I ever expected it to be. I can't make any judgments about whether that'll turn out to be a good thing or a bad thing; I'm just content to enjoy the ride.
This was the ep that convinced me that one of the theories I've been skeptical about is indeed true: Time is moving faster in the outside world than it is on the island. That's what Dan's experiment seemed to show, and these things all seem to back it up:
1. Taller!Walt. We already know he can somehow project himself to other places, so he's probably not a ghost like Locke thinks. The only explanation that makes sense (well, Lost-sense anyway, which is a different thing entirely from actual sense, but anyway) is that he made it home and time sped up so the Walt they're seeing now is the present-day, older Walt.
2. Although Ben can apparently travel back and forth from the island at will (which we kinda sorta knew after seeing the submarine, and the secret closet and passports seemed to confirm), he chose to be treated for his tumor on the island. Jack said that the disease was extremely fast-moving, so if time goes slower on the island then he'd have more time to live -- and potentially be healed -- there. I've seen some talk of a date on Ben's x-ray being sometime in 2005, which would make sense if the x-ray was taken off-island in a faster-moving world.
3. Okay, this one's a spoiler from next week's episode. I'll hide it under here.
4. Under the heading of "how fast IS time moving off-island?" let's discuss that 4-toed statue. My daughter only has 4 toes on each foot. Her last two "piggies" (hi, Sawyer!) are fused together, and when I first discovered this in that moment after a baby is born when you count all the fingers and toes, I asked the doctor if there was something they could do to fix it. He said, "You don't want to fix it; it just shows that she's more highly evolved than most of us." Apparently at some point in the future, ALL of our toes will be fused together to form a flap that's stronger and more adaptive than our 5 separate toes are. I was skeptical until I saw how my kid -- the daughter of a hopeless klutz (uh, that would be me) -- can dance and do gymnastics and run like the wind. Her "siamese toes" give her better balance! Back to Lost now: could a 4-toed statue have come to the island from a future generation of 4-toed humans?
Look at me, analyzing ALL THAT before I got to the Sawyer-squee. See Ma, I DO have self-control! Okay, on with the squee:
Sawyer, baby, you're the only one on that whole island who's making sense, imho. What DO they have to go back for? Back in the world, they had tragic lives. On the island, yeah, they've still dealt with tragedy, but they've also found a sense of purpose that they either didn't have, or that was making them miserable, in their old lives. They're only just now starting to get a grip on who they *are* on the island, and what good will it do them now to go back to what they *were*? We've seen how that works for them in the ff's, so I have to say that once again, our savvy conman is thinking ahead better than his friends are. And to those of you who are worrying that this means that Sawyer's giving up on life, first, *hugs*, and second, I don't believe that for one second. He's got some sort of vital role on that island, mark my words. And if you don't believe me, just LOOK at the boy! He was born to live on an island, half-naked and in the wild! Who'd want him to go back to civilization where he'd have to wear clothes, anyway? ;p
