You can do it either way, you can put just the X character that is alive and then put the other characters name in as a mention in the description.

Or, character X will be thinking about the dead character--doing more than just talking, you can definitely use the x/x (but make sure that the people know he's dead because pissedoffedness when someone reads a story and then finds out one of the characters is dead reaches epic proportions.
