Lots of slash potential in this episode, for those of us who still slash. Hi, y'all! I'm not the Lone Slasher, am I? Pfft, course not.
Jack taking orders from Sawyer. Wow. I knew I'd see a turnaround like that in the last season because it just had to happen, Darlton LOVES irony, but I'm okay with Jack's later decision to change his mind. I think he's developed a bit of a Sixth Sense, our once-prosaic, practical Doc. Claire embraces her visionary side, now I suspect Jack is following in his sister's footsteps. So he followed Sawyer (slash alert: sailboat sex! I wrote it once...my fingers are itching to do an encore, lol), but only so far. He went far enough to give the others their chance to leave (I like how they played that scene as a reflection of Sawyer jumping out of the plane), but I knew it, our Jack isn't going to leave that island. MY Sixth Sense tells me that he's going to be the "cork" in the bottle, the one who replaces Jacob, the one who keeps Evil confined to the island...our hero.
Sayid and Desmond at the well. Sayid didn't kill Desmond; surely we know that. The flash-sideways pretty much told us that there was a lesson learned - Sayid's murders made it impossible for him to be with Nadia ever again, even though she was alive and well. (Hee, "well"...Desmond's in the "well"...I think the morphine is still floating around in my head....) Sayid and Desmond both know now that dead doesn't necessarily mean "gone forever" when the island is involved, and Desmond said just the right thing to Sayid, so Sayid let him live, knowing that Locke would trust him to have followed orders and not check to make sure, and he was right. (Slash alert: Sayid/Desmond well-sex...take that "well" however it grabs ya.) ;)
Sawyer handcuffing Sayid. (Slash alert: Handcuff-sex. That one was just too obvious, 'nuff said.)
I believe that alt!Kate is innocent, somehow. Still, that might not help her on the island. Kate doesn't have a constant. Everyone else has one, either alive or dead. Desmond has Penny, of course. (Flashback: Penny's letter. "All we need to survive is one person who truly loves us....") Hurley has Libby. Sawyer has Juliet. Claire has Aaron. We still don't know which of the Kwons is a candidate, but I suspect it's Sun. Ever since Jin saw the pictures of Ji Yeon, I've been afraid that he's not going to survive. We know only one Kwon is a candidate. And now that Sun and Jin have had their reunion...I fear for them, for Jin. Because everyone else's constant is off-island. That's why they're going to get OFF the island, once the rift between the island the the alt!universe (that Jack and Juliet may have created with the bomb) is resolved (which may happen when whatever incident sunk the island occurred; possibly at the same time as the bomb...don't ask me to explain any of this, it's either the morphine or my Sixth Sense or my runaway logic-leaping imagination talking). Once the rift is resolved, the Constants, who are alive in the alt!universe, will be brought together with the ones they truly love - the ones who truly love them - and, sad as it is, I believe that Sun's constant is Ji Yeon, not Jin. Darlton has told us all along that not every story will have a happy ending, and Sun and Jin's might end tragically. (Or I could be full of it. I've never predicted Lost right before, why start now? So don't hate me for spec, 'k?)
Oh, back to Kate, I DO believe she'll be redeemed. I have a theory about how her story will end. I'm not gonna say what it is.
Now back to Jack and Sawyer, because all roads lead back to Jack and Sawyer with me, YOU KNOW THAT! At first I thought that Widmore's group turned on Sawyer and co. because Jack betrayed them to Locke, but that can't be right. We don't know how Widmore figured out that Sawyer was conning him, do we? But Jack couldn't have had anything to do with that because even though he told Locke, Locke wouldn't have communicated that to Widmore even if he could, which he couldn't because he broke the radio, because he wouldn't want to help Widmore. So I'm still ok with canon Jack and Sawyer...unless I read your reviews and realize I've missed something. Though we might get a few more slash ops on-island before the show ends, I don't think canon Jack and Sawyer will ever see each other again after the island, though I have a theory about how they'll always be connected and no, I'm not telling you that one either. ;) And (slash alert) their Guy Talk in the jungle was short but sexy. Fic will come of it. That, and more sailboat sex. Hey, I've got 6 more prompts to fill for my fanfic100 table, you're damn tootin' some slash will come out of that episode!
