So, I've discovered that I have a TYPE. If he's fictional, if he's damaged, if he's broody, if he's so wounded he tries to wound, and if LOVE CAN *ALMOST* SAVE HIM, I will *swoon*. I will obsess. And if he also happens to have GREAT hair, and moody turbulent (vulnerable) eyes, and the body of a god, I will fall in love for life.
Today I want to share my TV loves with you.

This is Todd. Todd was a character on One Life to Live years ago. Todd had a horrible childhood, with a cruel, abusive father and a mother who couldn't protect him. In college, he instigated a gang rape of a female student. And that was just the beginning. Over the years, Todd showed again and again that his soul is painted black. And yet. Every once in a while a ray of tenderness, a ray of light showed through. He found a woman to love; albeit a woman who was broken inside, herself. He had children, and he was as loving and devoted as a father could be. Every now and then, he helped people...including the girl he raped. He was cut on the cheek in a fight and from then on sported a deep scar, which to me was a reflection of how similar he was to the Phantom of the Opera; so damaged and dark yet craving redemption -- redemption which is always just out of reach. He never attained it. I cried for him, I cheered for him in his brief shining moments, I loved him obsessively and shamelessly. He was the first.

This is Tim Riggins. He's a football hero on Friday Night Lights. Tim is a Dark Man in the Making. I want to save him. I NEED to save him. He's a 17-year-old boy who has no one -- his father abandoned him and left him to be raised by his older brother, who doesn't have a clue how it should be done. Tim drinks, Tim runs wild, Tim habitually sets himself up for trouble, which always finds him. If anyone dares to care about him, he lets them down, he pushes them away. And yet. And yet any time that HE'S put in a postion of caretaker, when he's in the role of coach (for the younger football players, for the girls' PowderPuff game), he shines. Like Todd, if he finds a woman and becomes a father, he's gonna see his children as his road to redemption. But children can't save you; they aren't equipped for that. So again, that redemption he craves will stay just out of reach. My heart bleeds for him.
Now allow me a shallow fangirl minute, will you? The sunglasses, y'all. LOOK at him in the sunglasses. *thud*

This is Nash Brennan. He was MIS-cast on One Life to Live as a hero who could save the emotionally damaged Jessica. He fell in love with her bad-girl alter-ego, Tess, and set about trying to save her. Forbes March (the actor who played Nash) wasn't meant to be cast in the role of hero, of rescuer. He's the TYPE. He should be in a role where HE needs rescuing. He was fired from OLTL last month and tho I was outraged that I wouldn't get to see that HAIR, that CHEST, those EYES anymore, I think it was for the best. I know the OLTL writers can write a brilliant Dark Man character -- they're the same ones who created Todd. If they ever -- in true soap opera fashion -- bring Nash back from the dead, I hope he comes back as HIS evil twin. He'd be a perfect counterpart to the sometimes-evil Jess/Tess, Nash's wife, and they have a baby girl and another baby on the way, so they could explore the redemption-through-children theme with him. Maybe I should volunteer to write for OLTL, and make turning Nash into a Dark Man my personal project??? ;)

Do I need to introduce this guy? Or explain his issues? Sawyer is the quintessential Dark Man. Will his redemption always be just out of reach? Will he be another illustration of the heart-wrenching archetype represented by characters like the Phantom? Or will he attain his redemption, because the Light inside of him is as strong as the Darkness?
Either way, I love him obsessively and I suspect I always will.

Date: 2008-08-15 12:54 am (UTC)I adore Jeff. I just could never quite figure out his character's storyline on OLTL! The only episodes I've seen were uploaded on youtube and don't seem to be in order. Plus, you know, I was probably drooling over him too much to really pay attention - lol!

Date: 2008-08-14 01:15 pm (UTC)See, I didn't ever go to school on Wednesdays. It just got to be a habit with me -- Hump Day was the day for sleeping in and recharging, and my grades were good and I stayed out of my mom's way so eventually the grownups all just looked the other way and let me get away with it. So, I watched my soaps, All My Children (Jenny and Greg!) and General Hospital (Luke and Laura!). OLTL was just "that show that came on in between MY shows...until Todd came along. Since then OLTL has been *my* show, tho killing Nash was uncool and I'm way pissed at them right now. Am I babbling? *shuts up*
Oh, wait, one more thing. How'd I know those guys would be your type? ;) I think we could plug Sayid into the Dark Man mold very easily, don't you?

Date: 2008-08-14 03:23 pm (UTC)Sawyer has been awfully close to redemption lately, hasn't he? But I'm not ready for him to get there *yet*. I think we'll see more of our Dark Man next season...but I expect the Light Side to win in S6!
