Vacation History, 2005 - 2008:

August 2005, New Orleans-bound: Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans, then paid a visit to my house, dropping trees and wreaking havoc. Resolution: Stayed home, got pummeled, lived in half-rubble house for a week without electricity (or computer! or tv! or hot water! oh, woe!), had a miserable time.

November/December 2006, New Orleans-bound: Husband got orders to leave for Iraq. Resolution: Went anyway; had a great time.

May 2007, Gatlinburg and Great Fangirl Gathering Bound: Gatlinburg house burned down, leaving the GFG with no place to go. Much, much secret mourning for my house. Resolution: Rented a gorgeous and perfect-in-every-way mountain house; had a great time.

November/December 2007, Los Angeles bound: Tore rotator cuff, right arm paralyzed and ow, ow, omg OW. Resolution: Went anyway, took painkillers and got help from friends and strangers, bless 'em; had a great time.

March 2008, New York City bound: Broke my damned ankle in the Atlanta airport. Resolution: Went anyway, didn't tell a soul; two days later the ankle quit altogether, went to nice NYC doctor to get patched up, had a great time.

June 2008, Alaska-cruise bound: Missed flight from Atlanta - Anchorage, had apocalypse-type fight w/husband, lack of sleep + stress = fibro flare-up, OW OW. Resolution: Went anyway, LIVED in the cruise-ship spa; had a great time.

August 2008, New Orleans bound: Hurricane Gustav bears down on Louisiana, threatens to be a Category 4. *Might* not make landfall til Monday? Resolution:: Unknown.

Flist, what would YOU do?

I won't kill you! Charleston sounds like a great compromise, in fact. Although if you do that then the hurricane will SUDDENLY CHANGE DIRECTION!

Honestly, a lot of your vacation disasters have turned out a lot better than they seem like they should have! But New Orleans is NOT the place to be during a hurricane these days.

You have a map icon. You have the perfect icon for every subject. How do you do that???

Although if you do that then the hurricane will SUDDENLY CHANGE DIRECTION!

Oh, no kidding. That's exactly what I was thinking. Hugo did that, didn't he, stoopid hurricane. Ugh, pfft, I'm having a tantrum and that makes me incoherent.

Looking at my list, the only time I had a bad time was when I didn't go. Tho I suspect that if I *had* gone that time, er, I'd likely have regretted it. But if Gustav doesn't make landfall til Monday afternoon, maybe we can still get the family part of the vacation in, anyway. The fact that I'm mourning my alone-time tells me that I was really looking forward to it, though. Le sigh.

*IS IT OCTOBER 24TH YET???????*

*wonders what disaster will befall her then....

I'm just magic like that. (Except now you're getting the generic cause I'm only half-logged in.)

Gustav could turn out to be okay. If it doesn't, though, it'd be ugly.

*wonders what disaster will befall her then....

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Just rain, probably.

I'm a big fan of safety. Have all the fun you want, but don't be dumb about it. Don't go into the really bad parts of town after dark. If you're drinking, don't drive. Don't go into a construction zone without a hard hat and steel toed shoes. Don't use tools you don't know how to use...

and don't go into the path of a hurricane! (though, in my neck of the woods it's don't chase tornados.)

So, I wish you fun, but I also wish you health and safety. There's a fine line between crazy fun and stupid, and I really don't want you to cross it!

Maybe the family could meet you outside of the danger zone?
