Oh, you know that first draft I was whining and wailing about a minute ago? Well, my computer decided to re-boot itself and I hadn't saved it yet and now it's gone. It was a Word doc, but for some reason it wasn't automatically recovered the way open Word files usually are. I hated that draft with a passion but I didn't want it to die. If I get it back I will love it and feed it cookies and make it all shiny, I swear. Help?

I used to be really good at finding "lost" drafts but Microsoft has kind of thwarted me. Had you saved it at all? Allie, you need to get in the saving habit!!!! Lemme think about how to get it back, if possible.

If Word didn't have a recovery file when you reopened it, you may be screwed.

Um... you've had this happen to you before, if I remember correctly. Now, right NOW, before you do anything else, in Word, click on Tools, then under that, click on Options, then click on the Save tab. About half way down, make sure the Save AutoRecover info every: box is checked, and then set the minutes to a number NO GREATER THAN 4. Then click the OK button at the bottom.

Your icon is very appropriate. ;)

Yeah, see, I DO have AutoRecover (but I think it's set for 10 minutes), but sometimes when those AutoRecover windows pop up when I re-boot, I get confused about what's what (since I tend to work on three or four fics at a time so it's all, like, Doc 1 and Doc 2 and Doc 3) and so yeah, this is the second time I've lost something because I didn't handle the AutoRecover right. Last time I *was* screwed, but this time I found it, as you'll see in my slightly crazed last post. ;)

Thanks for caring, darlin'. *HUGS*

Do you also have the Always create backup copy box checked? That would be a good thing to check as well - then you *always* have a draft that's no more than a few minutes old. Used to be you could have the backups go to a different folder, but that may have been WordPerfect instead of Word cause I can't find that option now.

No, I don't have Always create backup copy checked, for some reason. You'd think that'd be a no-brainer, right? I'll go do that right now.

I know that feeling - I remember my old laptop ate half of "The Five Greatest Regrets of Sayid Jarrah" during the luau, it was the beginning of the end for Old Laptop!

Oooh, did you get it back?

Crap-top had completely munched it, but I did have a long-hand draft so hadn't lost the fic completely.

Was annoying though because that was the one used to meet my commitment to 4 queens at the luau and it was pretty close to the deadline (I'd gone on holiday in the middle of it and got behind!)
