What a great title!!! Follow the Leader = three leaders, a trinity of sorts. Sawyer leads his people to safety, Jack leads his little group to Jughead, and Locke leads his poor sheep...um, somewhere. I think each one of the trinity has a Holy Grail of sorts. Locke's is Jacob. Jack's is, well, not exactly a hydrogen bomb but what it represents, the chance for him to finally be the Hero he thinks he's meant to be. (And I say this with love for Jack -- y'all know I love him -- but he's so full of shit this time that if his eyes weren't already brown...they would be.) And Sawyer's...he's saving the women and children but I don't think it's even crossed his mind that he's a hero. He's saving Juliet. His grail has always been to find someone who both knows him and loves only him. Some of his marks might've loved him, but they didn't really know him. Kate knew him but didn't fully love him. When Sawyer called Juliet "sweetheart" my heart melted and I knew he'd do anything to keep her safe. And I love him for it, LOVE him, in spite of what I'm gonna say next.

Hurley broke my heart. First he told Miles and Jin that "Sawyer would never leave us behind," and then later, when they were watching the submarine exodus through binoculars, he said, "Don't worry, it'll be okay. Sawyer always has a plan, right?" He was so trusting, and then Sawyer really did go, leaving Hurley, Jack, and Kate behind. The very same three people he'd thought of as friends three years earlier. When he turned around and said, "Good riddance" to the island, I was upset with him. Yes, you heard it here, folks, Allie was upset with Sawyer.

BUT, here's the flipside. Everybody's debating "That Look" between Sawyer and Kate. To some it looked like, "Oh no, not HER again." To others it looked like, "I still love her and I'm all conflicted." To me, it looked like guilt. He was leaving Kate behind and she knew it.

And speaking of Kate, wow. I mean wow, talk about a woman scorned!!! First Jack basically said that he'd rather not have known her at all, and then she finds out that Sawyer was taking Juliet and leaving without her. If I had a sympathy bone in my body for Kate, it'd be aching right now. Not, like, having a neener-party or something. *cough*

I really need help here, folks:

Ben said, "When I left the island, Locke stepped in." Okay, I've made it this far, but Lost finally 'sploded my brain. Yes, when Ben left, Locke stepped in as the leader of the Others. But then, wait. Locke was bouncing around in time with Sawyer and co., right? What year was it when he disappeared with Christian? Then in last night's ep, Richard said that Locke had been gone for three years. And he didn't show up as Jeremy Bentham until a couple of weeks before the O6 went back to the island, so...where WAS he? Not leading the Others, because Richard said he'd been gone. So how come he's their leader NOW? Or, I mean, THEN...um, in 2007(?). This is the VERY FIRST TIME I've said this about Lost (see my nose growing?), but I'm VERY CONFUSED HERE!!!

I'm actually totally with Jack this season, even though I don't understand his thinking exactly. I always thought he was hot, but his character was starting to piss me off. Now, I appreciate the fact that he just sort of sat back for a while, thought stuff over (I guess) and is now making his move (whatever it is, right?).
I don't have any sympathy for Kate either. She's been nothing but selfish, so what's happening with her is okay with me. I would actually like to see Sawyer with Juliet, they've sold me on it, but I've been over Kate forever.
Okay, I was all with you until the very last paragraph where you actually scrambled my brain. The thinking, it hurts. :)

Jack...oh, my Jack, whatever will I do with you? He became a pacifist for what, 10 minutes? And then it was all, "Let's detonate a hydrogen bomb!" I mean, talk about 0 to 100 in ten seconds flat! But that's our Jack; I knew he couldn't stay apathetic for long.

I'm totally sold on Sawyer/Juliet. He loves her. She loves him. It's all simple and pure and beautiful, and so very, very different from the way it was with Kate. Sawyer needs this so much. I don't want it ever to end.

I really think Sawyer has a plan, so he wasn't really leaving the island/Hurley/those who trust him behind.

That bit about Locke taking over the Others made me go "huh?" too. I guess I'm getting used to things not making sense though because I didn't go back and think about it more. Locke and Richard could be in 2010, and the three years ago was 2007? But then Benry and Sun were there...yeah, I don't even know.

Oh my. For once you have more faith in Sawyer than I do. We've always been pretty much equal on that score in the past, haven't we? I guess it's just that I can't imagine what his plan could be, at this late date. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, I guess. *frets*

I just can't figure the Locke thing out. What were the Others doing, sitting around placidly for 3 years waiting for their "leader" to come back? And Locke was their leader before for about what, 5 minutes? I'll bake cookies for the first person who can explain this to me!

I actually think S5 Kate is my favourite Kate because for the most part she is acting out a non-romantic storyline. First she is all about Aaron, and now she is back to thinking only for herself. Although she is still my least favourite regular, I respect her more in these personas.

I think it has been 3 years since Locke left because Richard last saw him after he left the Orchid in the S4 finale. Then Locke disappeared in front of him and bounced around time with Sawyer and co., only seeing Richard in the past. Then he left the island and ended up in the present - which was three years later. In the process Locke lost three years, but he came back from the dead, so I guess he can't complain.

I agree that S5 Kate is far more tolerable than any other season before. Sadly, my hatred was at such a pitch after the last couple of seasons that at this point I can't imagine ever overcoming it completely. I do like her as a mother far better than I liked her as Jack and Sawyer's ping-pong ball.

Your Locke theory makes sense, but what I'm hung up on is the Others. He showed up one day and declared himself their leader, and Richard said they'd been waiting for him, and then he disappeared. Then he reappeared three years later and the Others just placidly followed the leader, Locke. What were they doing for the last three years, just waiting for him to come back from the void? I think I have a headache.

my take is when Locke left the Island with the donkey wheel, he jumped from whatever year it was to 2007. he time jumped OUT of the island, so it was not 3 years for him at all. for richard, yes, as he had last seen him around the freighter fiasco (end of S4). We know Ben time jumped too, from end of 2004 to somewhere in 2005 when he turned the wheel too.

Okay, I think I've got a better idea of what was going on with Locke, but I'm still puzzled about the others. Back in 1994 he was their leader for a few minutes, right, before he disappeared. Then three years went by, and suddenly he showed up and declared himself their leader again. Are they really that trusting, that they'd wait around for three years for a "leader" who'd only been there for the blink of an eye? Apparently so...I just can't fathom it.

That is the most perfectly perfect icon I've ever seen. :)
