I like the new people. Y'all are gonna skin me alive, aren't you? Should I hide under the bed?

Okay, first impressions:

Daniel: He's awfully cute in a nervous-academic-type way. He reminds me of my next-door neighbor, who's a sweetheart. He (Dan, not the n.d.n., is a terrible liar, though. "Noooooo, that didn't come from our...er, yes it did, eep." Lol.)

Miles: He's a badass and I like badasses, especially when they combine it with snark. Okay, his being a ghostbuster has the potential for future cheez, but for now, he's got my attention.

Charlotte: She's a fanatic of some type. Could be good, could be bad. She's a typical Lost noob, I guess.

The pilot...uh, Frank? What was his name, y'all?: I like him a lot. Jimmy Buffett comes to Craphole Island, eeeeeeeee!!! Now, as long as he doesn't go 'round singing "Why don't we get drunk and screw" where Sawyer and Kate can hear it, he gets to be my new BFF. ;)

I think I need to start a new feature in my reviews called "similarities and repetitions", because you just can't shake a Jesus stick on Lost without hitting one. Okay, maybe we've never had a "Miles" before (have we?), but all the other names are repeats. And resemblances -- I might be reaching for a couple of these -- Dan could pass for Charlie's older brother. Not Liam. Another, geekier older brother. Charlotte and Miles, eh, possibly Claire and Jin; I'd never have seen any connection there if it weren't for, OMG, the pilot (dammit, I'm trying to get this posted before I re-watch, what IS his name???). Close your eyes and listen to his voice. He's LOCKE! Or he's Locke's ventriloquist's dummy or something. I wanna shave him and see if they look alike under the facial hair.

So, the verdict: As long as the new people don't take time away from my old people *clings*, they can stay awhile. Y'know, until the smoke monster gets them or I decide they're evil.

Tomorrow I'll ramble about who-all got pwned. *cough*kate*cough*

I have about the same reactions to all the new people you do. Especially Daniel and Miles.

I'm glad I'm not the only one willing to give the writers the benefit of the doubt and enjoy the newbies. Like you said, as long as they don't take away from our people's screen time. In this ep, I think they kept a nice balance. It helps, I think, that the flashbacks were pretty brief, so there was a lot of time for island hijinks, in both camps.

I've discovered that I don't mind newbies when they're not shoved down my throat. I balk when someone shows up already labeled "Jack's New Love Interest" complete with 2 flashback episodes that advance the show NADA. In this case it seems like the writers have learned their lesson and they've gonna let any chemistry that might develop happen naturally, and they're too busy getting the show in gear to waste time giving each newbie (who, face it, might be dead in a couple of weeks) their own boring fb. It's a hopeful sign, I think.

But now I can't get Jimmy Buffett songs out of my head. Oh well, there are definitely worse things. I could be humming Paris Hilton tunes.

FRANK SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE LOCKE! It kept freaking me out. Anytime he'd speak I'd go, "WTF, Locke?"

Jack pwns with the wink.

And your boy spanked Ben alright. Good boy.

GOOD, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. My kid caught it, too. 'Course it's probably just a coincidence or the writers are mind-fucking us again, but it's freaky nonetheless.

Lol, subtlety has never been Jack's middle name, and that vaudeville wink was just adorable.

I have a feeling that my boy is gonna be spanking Ben for a long time to come. 'Cause there's no way the writers are gonna kill off that character, and I just can't see him and Sawyer ever smoking the peace pipe and becoming BFFs.

Daniel is played by Jeremy Davies..watch his movies, he's like that all the time, seriously love Jeremy but he's a little left of center and I adore him for it, and think he's a fantastic actor.

I loved LOVED this episode more than the premiere.

Is it just me or is Sawyer almost like the muscle of Locke's group, I can't put my finger on it, but he's leading too.

I do love me some angry Sawyer, and angry questioning Jack too.

Me, I like the new people, and the fact that we know they have a better fate than the tailies at least..well, I guess that's a matter of perspective too..at least from what we've seen.

I think, in the long run, Locke's gonna be too interested in kissing the island's butt to serve as any kind of leader. I guess kinda in the same way as Ben -- though Ben's interests seem to be more self-serving than island-serving -- people will revolt against Locke as a leader if they realize that he'll sacrifice them in a heartbeat if the island (or Walt or Jacob or whoever the dead-dictator-of-the-day is) tells him to. Sawyer, at least, only kills bad guys and hasn't gone 'round the bend talking to ghosties and the sky. And he won't. In this leadership-race, I think Sawyer gets my vote! :)

Oh, so I'm not the only one who made a Pace connection with Dan! Except that mine was all, "You are Charlie before Charlie made me want to punch him until he fell down. This is adorable, carry on." I would really like for him to have gen time with Sayid now and wind up spilling his fluttery little guts all over the place while Sayid is like, "I would not be half as emotionally stunted if all of my interrogations had been this easy." He is smishy and adorable.

(I like all of the newbies and am willing to give Miles the benefit of the doubt-at least I can see why he has a good place on the show even though I don't feel any real empathetic connection with him-but I won't lie to you: I laughed long and hard when Charlotte got pwninated.)

Yup, me too...I've learned with Lost not to pin my hopes on ANY female's chances living up to standards, so I'm just gonna adopt a wait 'n see attitude and see how she takes what the islanders dish out. I think I've got a better take on how Dan and Miles will handle it (kinda a Jeckyll & Hyde pair, aren't they), and I suspect that Frank'll just follow Desmond's lead and ingest the 100-proof antidote. And hey, if the island is invisible to outsiders (and therefore no pesky DEA planes flying overhead), it'd make one hell of a place to grow weed of the wonky variety. Forget Craphole Island, they've found Margaritaville!!!

Not gonna skin ya at all, sweetie!

I agree!

First off, I'm biased cuz I have a soft spot for cute boys, so nervous-adorable Dan fit that list, oh my word. But all of them are interesting, and they're actually BRINGING something to the table! I want to find out all about their mission, and why they're there, and I don't just want them to leave!

But also agreeing that they just need to strike the balance between "let's do nothing but show the shiny new toys" and "let's pretend there are no shiny new toys." I still want to know about all the classics, I want to see & hear from them too, so, I'm optimistic.

I hadn't even noticed the name repetitions...I have to be honest, I am not remembering who's had those names before! Time to do my research like a good fangirl, it seems.

Eeeeee! (again!)

I love all the enthusiasm I'm seeing round and about for this ep! Tho I must repeat my warning (this is *not* unconditional love for the newbies, by any means) that I will let them stay ONLY AS LONG AS THEY DON'T TAKE AWAY FROM MY ORIGINAL PEEPS. The fact that they got a shared 4-part backstory, instead of 4 eps -- one for each of them -- is an excellent sign.

Here, I'll help you cheat on your fangirl homework. :)

Charlotte - see also: Charlotte Malkin, daughter of psychic Richard Malkin (who told Claire that Aaron should not be raised by another); teenager who drowned and was resurrected on the autopsy table and also looks like new-Charlotte and has the same freaky eyes.

Daniel - see also: Danny Pickett, would-be Sawyer-killer. I like this Daniel waywaywaywayWAY better!

Miles - I can't think of another Miles. Somehow I want to say that's Vincent's real name, but I know it's not because Vincent is a girl named McKenzie, I think. /babbling and confusing the issue

Frank - see also: Frank Duckett. Have there been any other Franks?

I actually like the newbies too...I think Lost has finally learned how to add people without being awkward about it.

I quite like Daniel. Although I fear he may be crazy. Not that that'll keep me from loving him if so, of course.

Agreed. *high-fives* And it's about damn time!

I think Daniel could easily be pushed over the edge into a nervous breakdown. He seems like he's already a long way down the road toward that destination. But what's one more loony when you've got an island full of 'em? ;)

Dan could pass for Charlie's older brother.

Funny, when he was crying while watching the TV, he reminded me strongly of
Bearded!Jack!

I'm not wild about the new people but what else is new? Usually they just serve to endear us more to the existing folks, LOL. But we'll see what they have to offer. Actually, I think just Miles bugs me. The rest are mildly intriguing.

I hadn't even thought about Dan resembling crying!Jack, but now that you mention it.... I guess I'd just filled in the Jack-twin slot already with Artic!Brazilian!guy.

And then they die, lol. Somehow I can stay sane about the addition of newbies just as long as I remember that!

This was the best job they've ever done of introducing new people, that's for sure. A little goes a long way.

I think Charlotte is Shannon. She looks kind of like her, especially in her archaeology hat. Dan does look like Charlie. Last week I thought he was Paolo come back to life, though. Someone needs to get those boys a sandwich. Miles is the guy I was hating on from a different show. Jimmy Buffett is, well, Jimmy Buffett. They're making me confused with the pilot and the other pilot and the copilot from Heroes, and which one was Bernard's son again?

I just love Sawyer. The end.

I think they're finally, FINALLY getting the hang of introducing newbies. It gives me hope that they *are* capable of learning from their blunders, after all.

I guess I made a Charlotte/Claire leap because Charlotte's hat reminded me of Claire in her hat back in S1. But is Charlotte a redhead? She didn't look like it in Tunisia, but when it was all wet on the island it did. The island needs a redhead. Just once, I wanna see somebody get sun-poisoning so I can say *neener*.

Anyhow, Sawyer fills all our hair-fetish needs, so who cares about the new girl? ;)

Date: 2008-02-09 02:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eponine119.livejournal.com
I thought she looked blonde in the desert, too, but on the island she's redheaded. Although I still think if anyone's going to get sun poisoning it's Claire, poor thing.

You're right, of course, Sawyer's hair is all we need!!! (Well, and a few other parts of him. ;)

Seems like everyone's on board with giving the new people a chance this time around. To me, the way they were introduced doesn't seem forced and that helps a lot. Also, I appreciate that it doesn't seem that any of them are being introduced as "love interests". When they do that (yes, yes, we know I'm talking about Juliet) it makes me gag. They're a quirky, fucked up, interesting group and so far none of them are particularly likable, ergo, I kind of like them all.

From: [identity profile] alliecat8.livejournal.com
I ♥ it when everybody's more-or-less on the same page. And yes, I've gotta say kudos to the writers; this time around the introduction of new people didn't seem forced or manipulative. But then again, I liked "The Other 48 Days," too, and I was willing to give the tailies a chance until Ana Lucifer started abusing Sawyer, so I'm only cautiously on board with the new folks. They've still gotta earn my trust. (Uh, "trust" in this instance meaning "not to be beating up on my boys, please." Aside from that, they're welcome to be Locke-worthy crazies and as long as they're interesting, I'll be happy!)

Date: 2008-02-08 11:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zelda-zee.livejournal.com
I'd like to see any of them try to beat up our boys! Our boys are a helluva lot tougher than the new guys (& gal) seem to be.

It's true though, there's always the Ana factor. I was somewhat okay with her until then too, so it remains to be seen how acceptable the freighter people will end up being.

As [livejournal.com profile] ficangel pointed out, fandom would be all over Miles "like catnip" if he only had dimples and better hair. ;)

I'm kinda glad none of the newbies are hotties (well, of the guys...I can't judge women), because there are already more of those on the island than I know what to do with!

no skinning you alive from me. Not at all.
Again, we agree.
I didn't like the idea of introducing them with a fb, I was afraid it was meant to be a way to force us to like them. But it wasn't. I actually liked it, because it was more a way to help the plot and give us more details about the general picture. And some little hints about the newbies, alright, but just to increase the mystery around them .
:)))

I think the newbies' flashbacks were handled masterfully. I haven't heard a single person complain about having new people "shoved down our throats," because they didn't waste FOUR flashbacks on them. They gave us just enough information to make us interested, but not enough to make us sigh and roll our eyes. So instead of *resenting* the newbies, we're curious about them. I hope this is a good sign that the writers have learned a thing or two about pacing. It seems to make all the difference!

Aw, for some reason Sawyer looks like a kid in your icon. *pets him*
