*snort* That was easy. I was driving near my kids' (former) school yesterday and I got to thinking about all the fitness equipment I'd bought the school when I worked there, and wondering if it was going to waste and if so, was it at least being taken care of? Then I actually walked in during a tumbling session, so yay, the equipment is being used. I got to talking to the coach in charge and found out some other stuff, like, they don't have a spirit coordinator anymore and in the void, the principal had been trying to handle it himself. Which explains why the dance and tumbling teams never performed at football games or street festivals this year. So the principal walked by and I said, "Can I talk to you?" and he said, "I can give you two minutes." Which is all it took!

Once in his office I said, "I want my old job back," and he said, "Hallelujah, Allie, you're an answer to a prayer." (It helps that he's Thing 1's old basketball coach and we're friends from way back). I said, "I did the math, underestimating the number of kids we'll have, and I figure that if you pay me and the coaches, it's still a great money-making thing for the school so we need to keep it up and running" and he agreed; didn't even ask me what I wanted to be paid, heh. I guess I get to set my own price, (within reason, of course!). Then he said he was worried sick because the tumbling coach was graduating (we always use Mississippi State students) and he didn't know how to find a new one, and I said, "I've got one for you," and he said, "This is awesome! Welcome (back) aboard!"

LOL, the best coach I know of is, of course, my daughter Thing 2! She's taken tumbling since she was 3, dance since she was 4, cheer since like forever, and she's taught young 'uns at gyms all over the place, as well as at the school - when she was a 6th grader, still in elementary school and I was spirit cooridinator, if the tumbling coach called in sick I'd get her to teach his classes. She's strong as a horse and knows her stuff...*cough*do I sound like I'm justifying nepotism here?*cough*

the nepotism question? is there another question I don't see? *haz teh dumb*

I do not think you should ask your just-off-to-college daughter to come back home and work at her school with her mother. While I can see the appeal I think it would impede her progress into the world. This is the "breaking away" stage and you have to let her do it. and help her (throw that baby out of the nest) if necessary. I know too many people who failed at this stage of development to advise otherwise. Someone else will likely have more perspective.

And I reply with total authority: buzzkill.

Thankfully, the adult daughter who has been trained for a job like this all her life is still over the moon about it. She's applied at the elementary school in the past without me, not knowing that there was no coordinator there to hire her. Now that I am the coordinator and it's my job to pick a suitable coach, I did. I don't have any doubts or questions about that; I'm over the moon too because not only does my employment increase our every-decreasing income, but *her* employment means she'll be more self-sufficient; less dependent on us. It's a win-win situation. She'll learn what it's like to earn her extras with hard work, and believe me, she won't get any breaks because I'm her mother. We spent the whole drive back from Tuscaloosa making plans about how to improve the program. Her ideas were inspired and impressive and difficult but doable.

My only concern was whether or not it would look as if I wasn't playing fair, sort of along the lines of how the other mothers complained when she was the lead dancer back when I was the sponsor of the dance team. In truth, her coach picked her with no input from me because she was the best dancer - and she proved herself. Just as she will prove herself to be a coach who is professional and respected and loved by the kiddies. I'm completely confident about that.

So maybe it looks like nepotism now, but give it a few months and that'll be moot. Thanks for making me think it through and realize I should stop borrowing trouble!

(Would you like me to re-screen this?)

I tried to post a reply earlier but either was too stupid to do so or you deleted it.

Yay for both of you! I only have one question: what's a spirit coordinator?
